A waitress is a woman who takes orders and serves food and drinks at a restaurant.

You probably know what I mean by "at a restaurant" - that's one of those places where people go to eat out. When you're eating at a place like this, you might see someone walking around with a notepad and pencil - that's likely the waitress. She'll come over to take your order when you sit down, usually to tell you what specials they have today or ask if you want something from their menu. If you need more water or want to ask for the check at the end of your meal, she'll be there too. Waitresses are like hosts and hostesses in restaurants - they make sure everything goes smoothly while you eat.
