A skid is when something slides or moves quickly on its surface, often because of a lack of traction. This can happen with cars, especially if they drive too fast on icy roads.
Skidding is not uncommon, actually. You might have seen someone's car slide across the road during winter, or maybe you've even done it yourself behind the wheel. It usually happens when there's water or ice on the pavement and the tires don't get a good grip. If you're driving a bike, skidding can happen too if your wheels lock up. Skidding is also used to describe movement in other areas like sports – for example, a skateboarder might perform tricks while skidding along the board.
An out-of-control sliding motion as would result from applying the brakes too hard in a car or other vehicle.
Example: Near-synonyms: wheelslide, sideslip
