A shortstop is a player on a baseball team who plays between second and third base.
In a baseball game, there are nine players from each team on the field at a time. A shortstop is usually one of them, and they're responsible for getting to balls hit in their direction quickly so that they can catch or throw it to other teammates who can tag out the runner trying to get to third base. They also have to be ready to cover second base if the ball comes back from the outfielder. A shortstop needs to be very fast, good at fielding and throwing, and able to think quickly so that they can make smart decisions on the fly about what to do with the ball.
