rival

A rival is someone or something that competes with you for something, like attention, success, or even a prize.

When we talk about rivalry, it's usually in sports, business, or games – places where people or teams are trying to win or come out on top. But rivals can also be people who have the same interests or hobbies as us, and we might not always get along with them because we're competing for the same thing. For example, if you love playing soccer and there's another kid in your school who's really good at it too, that kid could be a rival of yours. In this case, your rivalry isn't necessarily mean-spirited – it just means you both want to do well.
