Outwards means towards or directed away from something or someone. It can also refer to moving or extending outward.

When we talk about looking out of a window, for instance, we say that our eyes are gazing outwards at the sky. When you're sitting outside in your garden and watching people walk by, they're moving outwards in every direction - towards the park, away from their houses, or just strolling aimlessly. Even when you're packing a suitcase to travel overseas, your belongings are packed in such a way that they take up less space and move more freely - it's all about arranging things so that they're not crowded or cramped, but rather have some room to breathe and spread outwards.

How common is "outwards"?
