A mathematician is someone who studies and works with mathematics.

You might hear about math competitions or awards for outstanding achievements in math, and that's because there are people involved, called mathematicians. They're not just teachers or professors who give you homework, although they might do that too. A mathematician could be a researcher trying to solve complex problems, a scientist working on data analysis, or an engineer using math to design new technology. Sometimes we think of famous mathematicians like Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein, who made groundbreaking discoveries in their fields. But the word also applies to people you might meet at work or school – anyone who has a passion for and uses math regularly is a mathematician.
