An interlock refers to a connection or relationship between two things that are closely linked.
When we talk about something being an interlock, we're usually thinking about how parts fit together in some way. This can happen with machines, locks and keys, or even different systems of management or government. For example, if you have a lock on your door that requires a special key to open it, the key is said to interlock with the lock. In a more abstract sense, two organizations might interlock in terms of how their policies work together.
A safety device that prevents activation in unsafe conditions.
Example: The demonstrator couldn't figure out why the machine wouldn't work, until he remembered that there was an interlock so it wouldn't operate with the cover open.
To fit or clasp together securely.
