An "indy" usually refers to an independent business or film that's not controlled by big companies.

The word "indy" comes from "independent," but when people talk about indie music or movies, they often shorten it to just "indy." You'll hear this term a lot in the context of the arts. For example, someone might say, "I love going to see indie films at the local cinema" or "This music festival features a bunch of up-and-coming indy bands."
