Halfway means being at or near the middle point of something.
When we talk about traveling from one place to another, halfway often refers to a specific location that's roughly equidistant from our starting and ending points. For example, if you're driving from New York to Los Angeles, the halfway mark might be in Texas or maybe even Oklahoma. You'd know it when your GPS says so! On longer trips, halfway breaks are great opportunities to rest, refuel, and grab some snacks.
The word "halfway" can also describe a state of being or a situation that's not fully one thing or another. If someone is halfway through a task, they're making progress but still have work left to do. If you're in a relationship that's halfway serious, it means things are getting more committed, but there's no clear destination yet.
Half of the way between two points; midway.
