A growl is a loud, low sound that animals and sometimes people make when they're feeling angry or threatened.

When we talk about growls, we often think of dogs. You know how your dog might let out a loud growl when it sees another animal outside the window? That's a common way to use the word "growl". But humans can also growl - like when someone is trying to get our attention and they make that low, grumbly noise in their throat. Some people even growl at each other during arguments or competitions, like in sports or video games.
