gesture

A gesture is a way of showing your feelings or intentions with your body or movements.

When we think of gestures, we often imagine hand waves or nods of the head. But really, any movement that shows what you mean can be called a gesture. If you're trying to get someone's attention on the street, you might make a big sweeping motion with your arm. That's a gesture. When you shake hands with someone, it's also a kind of gesture. And if you throw up your hands in frustration, that's definitely a strong gesture too. We use gestures all the time to add meaning and emotion to our words, or even when we can't talk at all - like when we're waving goodbye from a distance.
