A footballer is someone who plays football, a sport where two teams try to kick or head a ball into the other team's goal.

When people talk about a new transfer to their favorite team, they often say that so-and-so is joining as a top-class footballer. This means that this person has shown great skill and speed on the field in previous games, usually for another team. If your friend wants to be like his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, he might say "I want to be a professional footballer when I grow up."
