A fender is a part of a vehicle that protects its body from damage when it hits something. It's usually made of metal and sticks out from the side or back of the car.
When we talk about a fender, we're often thinking about cars, but the word can also be used for other things like a bike fender that keeps you dry in rainy weather. Some musical instruments have fenders too – in this case, it's a soundboard that's attached to an electric guitar or bass guitar.
How common is "fender"?
Word fender is considered rare in modern English. It has a balanced usage among all categories: speech, fiction, newspapers and academic texts.
