A fart is a sound and smell that comes out of your bottom when gas builds up inside your body.

When people say "fart", they usually mean the act of passing gas, but it's also common to hear someone jokingly blame an object or situation for making them fart. For example, you might laugh if someone says "This pizza made me fart all night!" But sometimes, instead of saying "I passed gas", people will say "I let out a silent fart" or "I felt a fart coming on". This usually means they didn't actually make a loud noise, but their body was about to release some gas.

How common is "fart"?

Word fart is considered rare in modern English.
It appears most frequently in fiction texts and less often in other writings.
