evacuate

An evacuated area is one that's been cleared of people, usually because there's something wrong like an emergency or disaster.

When we say someone has to evacuate from a building, it means they have to leave immediately and go somewhere safe. For example, if you're at work and the fire alarm goes off, you'll probably be evacuated out of the building so everyone can get outside where it's safe. The same thing happens during emergencies like natural disasters or chemical spills – authorities will often evacuate people from a certain area to protect them. If an entire town needs to leave because of flooding, that's another example of evacuation.
