An escalation is when things get worse or more serious, like a conflict that's getting bigger and harder to solve.
When people talk about escalating something, they usually mean that it's becoming more difficult to control. For example, if a protest starts peacefully but gets violent as time goes on, the situation has escalated. If you're negotiating with someone and their demands keep increasing, you might say that the negotiations are escalating too.
(ambitransitive) To increase (something) in extent or intensity; to intensify or step up.
Example: Violence escalated during the election.
