A crossover refers to two things that are different but combined, or someone who blends into another group. A popular example of this is when a person from one musical genre starts performing music from another genre.

Think about it: when two people with different interests become close friends, we might say they've crossed over into each other's worlds. The same goes for when a sports team from one region competes against teams from a different region – the opposing teams have 'crossed over' to play in their territory. In music, artists who blend styles are often called crossovers too.

How common is "crossover"?

Word crossover is considered rare in modern English.
It has a balanced usage among all categories: speech, fiction, newspapers and academic texts.
