A cowardly person shows a lack of courage or bravery when faced with a difficult situation. They might avoid standing up for what they believe in or take the easy way out instead.

When people call someone cowardly, it usually means that this person has acted in a way that's not very strong or brave. For example, if someone sees bullying happening and doesn't do anything to stop it, we might say they were being cowardly because they didn't stand up for what was right. It could also mean being afraid of trying new things or taking risks. Imagine you're with friends at a party and one of them is too scared to try something the others are doing - like going bungee jumping - that person might be seen as cowardly by their friends.
