coaster

A coaster is a flat piece of material used to protect surfaces from water marks or spills.

You might have coasters at home for your coffee table or dining table. They're usually made of plastic, wood, or cork and come in different shapes and designs. When you put them under a cup or glass, they catch any liquid that might spill over the edge so it doesn't leave a stain on the surface underneath. This way, your furniture stays clean and looks nice for longer.
