An argument or disagreement between people can cause them to chatter back and forth.

Chatter is a word we often hear when we think about gossiping with friends or family. You know, those conversations that go on for hours, usually about nothing very important? Like when you're at the office break room and coworkers are chatting about their weekends or sharing silly stories about each other's kids. Or maybe you're talking to a friend who just had the craziest thing happen in her life and she can't stop chattering about it. It's like a stream of thoughts pouring out, usually fast and often without stopping for air. Chatter can also be used when people are trying to decide on something together - they'll go back and forth arguing different ideas until one of them wins the conversation (and maybe gets their way).

How common is "chatter"?

Word chatter is considered rare in modern English.
It has a balanced usage among all categories: speech, fiction, newspapers and academic texts.
