A caterpillar is an early stage of a butterfly or moth's life cycle.

When we think about butterflies and their beautiful transformations from crawling creatures to flying ones, it's easy to understand what a caterpillar is. You might have seen pictures or even watched videos of tiny bugs moving slowly on leaves. Those are caterpillars! They eat a lot and grow, eventually attaching themselves to a leaf or branch to form a chrysalis (a resting place where they transform into a butterfly).
